How’s everyone here in LJ? I hope everything’s good. I’ve been generally good too, a bit busy with teaching of course. I just realized that teaching isn’t just coming to class to deliver the material. But it also involves preparing the right material (so the students won’t get bored), making quizzes and tests, and emotionally dealing with students. In general, my students are nice, but there’s one student that I need to be aware of. He’s on the verge of being impolite. If he starts acting up again, I’ll make him sure that I am the one in charge in the class.

Music: I can’t wait to listen to The Bravery’s new album! I’m such a Bravery’s whore, for your info xD. I have listened to two tracks, Slow Poison and Hatefuck and I love them both! Their new album Stir The Blood will be released next month. I hope it’ll be here in Indonesia as soon as possible.

Film: Just saw The Secret of Moonacre and I love it, especially the costumes. The dresses worn by Dakota Blue Richards are so pretty I’d like to wear them! Also, Ioan Gruffud playing as Dakota’s uncle is oh so scrumptious *grin*. I have this particular interest over Welsh guys, you know. Another thing that attracts me is the guy who plays Robin de Noir. I’d never seen him before, but he’s kinda cute. His costume is also great, the combo of Clockwork Orange, glam rock and Cillian Murphy’s hair in Breakfast on Pluto. As a fantasy film, I think it’s okay. 3 of 5 stars.

Book:I have a personal target to read 50 books this year, and so far I have read 49 books! Hip hip hooray! Currently I am reading Black Book by Orhan Pamuk. Hopefully it’ll be my 50th book :).

It hurts but I have to )

Ohhhkay, I have been quite mellow in the last two days. But I will try to stand up tall and believe that God has another scheme for me in relationship-wise. See the glass as half-full, Ayu. You must.

The illustrator that I used to work with just knew that I have resigned from the publishing company and she sent me a very sweet text message. She basically said it’s been fun working with me. Oh wait, I am the one who should have said that, sweetheart! I feel really grateful for having a chance to work with someone as talented as you. Reading her message truly touches my heart. Knowing that someone is happy working with you is a sweet little bliss :).

Finally I watched G.I. Joe. I used to read the comics when I was a kid, so I was curious to know hot the film would be. It was ... okay, not my favourite genre though. Joseph Gordon Levitt as Cobra Commander? Too tiny and cute >.<. Sienna as Baroness? Too perfect! The characters in the film are a bit different with the ones in the comics. The changes are not really vital, methinks. All in all, a very summer film.

Moving on to music scene, one of my fav bands The Bravery will release their new album this November. I am as excited as hell! I like their two previous albums so I hope this new one won’t disappoint me either. And they’re working with MIA producer? I wonder how the songs will sound like!
And whoopsie, let’s see the boys’ latest look. 4 years surely have brought many changes!

I always want to have white jeans since I am a huge fan of Manics, and it seems that many musicians wear them too, from Hotel (The Kills) to Mr. John Conway (The Bravery). I must have the skinny ones *writing it into my shopping list*. Moving on to Sam Endicott ... I am not sure whether I like his current hairdo or not. There’s something kinda weird with his bangs. Although it’s better than his mohawk four years ago teehee. And do I see a red flower on your jacket? A new trend? While Dirt has left behind his make-up days. He looks much more macho with the white suit. See, white is the new black! And Michael Zakarin, dearest Michael. Red jeans make you look shorter. Donate them to the museum. Never touch them again. Oh, two thumbs up for shaving away the facial hair! Meanwhile, Ant is fine. Although I won’t say he looks special. But all in all, I dig the fact that they throw away those leather jackets :). They look classier now.

And since when I become a fashion critic? Hah.

Usually, I spend my Friday nights at home. Reading a novel, getting online, or watching boring programmes on telly. But my last Friday night was awesome, one of the best I’ve ever had! One of my best friends, Era, came from Surabaya, then in the afternoon we hung out at Yoan’s crib. We played with her niece, shared some gossips, and played cards with this marvelous pack of Starbucks’ cards! Playing with those cards really really made me drool. Anyhoo, after that, we went to Summarecon Mal Serpong to have some dinner and to enjoy the night. As I often said, it’s one of my favourite malls because it has a very friendly atmosphere and many great places to hang out. But I highly recommend ordering some drinks and sitting at the city walk. If you’re lucky, a band will perform to accompany you :). Okay, enough from me promoting the mall. Let me share some pics!

Fun fun fun )

Tomorrow is the Independence Day, and I will celebrate it by watching The All American Rejects. I hope I will have a blast :).

And do mock me. I haven’t seen Up, Public Enemy, The Half Blood Prince, and G.I. Joe! But I just watched Lost in Austen! A very fan-girlish film and I am highly entertained :). Basically, it’s about a girl switching place with Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. Don’t ask how, you won’t find the answer in the film! And yes, Amanda Price meets Mr. Darcy, and falls in love and such. There are many scenes sooo funny, yet if you haven’t read Pride and Prejudice, you won’t get the joke. A must see for all Austen’s fans!

I met someone in Goodreads and since I think he got a nice bookshelf, I approved his request. Then he added me on Facebook, that was fine. But then he kept commenting on every status that I wrote. At first, I was being polite and giving responds. But then he sent me messages, asking details about my life! Dude, I don't even know you in real life and you're stepping into my personal life. Back off. Grmbl, it really sucks. Should I pay him no attention or erase him from my friend list? What do you think?

Oh, I am reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte, which is really good. Then I googled the adaptation and found that Rupert Graves and Toby Stephens play in it :D. I want to watch it so bad!

Hi, I am back! Did I miss something big?

Anyway, first of all, my condolence to all the victims of Mega Kuningan bombing and their family. Stay strong. We’ll always pray for you.

It was shocking, right? When thought the nightmare wouldn’t come, but then, yeah it happened. But we Indonesians will stand strong, no matter what. I am also glad that there are many foreign musicians like Joel Madden from Good Charlotte and Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy who show their support to Indonesia. Even though I am not into your music, guys, I really appreciate that. Cheers!

What’s new about my life? Not much. I have been busy translating a visual dictionary, which is a fun job and helps me improve my vocabulary. Also, I am reading Emma and Pickwick Papers. So far Emma is entertaining and I have to say I am in love with Mr. Knightley. Oops, I think I have a certain affection with 40ish-year-old guys in classics :)! Even though I am not really fond of Emma’s attitude, I do think the love frictions in the novel are interesting. A heart cannot be controlled, miss Woodhouse! Meanwhile, Pickwick Papers is quite funny. Some people said it is very hilarious. I won’t say it is funny yet there are some scenes that indeed make me laugh. In Indonesian, the right word to label this novel is heboh because unexpected incidents always happen and make the world of the Pickwickians chaotic! It is fun, though. Kinda reminds me of Three Man in A Boat.

Moving on to music, I have been listening a lot to Bright Eyes and The Killers. Digital Ash in A Digital Urn by Bright Eyes, I cannot stop listening to it. I love every song in the album, and I adore Conor Oberst’s lyrics. He is such a poet, I envy his writing talent. My love to The Killers also grows *facepalms*. I used to hate Mr. Flowers since he often mocked The Bravery but then after Day and Age, I find myself have a crush on him. He’s getting thinner and more gorgeous. It seems like being a dad makes him hotter than ever!

I am a bit embarrased to say this, but I haven’t got a chance to watch The Half-blood Prince!. It’s like everybody is talking about it, and I am kinda clueless (even though I have read the book)! I must watch it soon. I think I will try the new Blitz cinema in BSD. Oh, also Public Enemy, yaiiyy! Cannot wait to see it. So, are you Depp team or Bale team? I go for Bale <3!

My editor is in Medan right now, so I really do not have anything to do this week. Jobless. But I think it’s the perfect time for me to read and watch lots.

Anyway, I am kinda disgusted to see how people become overly attached to gadgets! I do understand that technology is used to help people, but nowadays technology becomes more like a fashion statement. In order to be stylish or cool, you have to have the latest gadget. That’s silly for me. Oh well, it’s just me and my classic mind.

Been exposed lots to Jane Austen these days. I just finished reading Sense and Sensibility, yaiiyy! I think it’s good and I enjoyed reading it. However, the film left such a strong impression to me I think the novel’s quite flat. Compared to the novel, he characters are livelier in the film. Yet I understand maybe that’s how people express and feel during that era. Anyhow, as this is my first experience reading Austen (don’t laugh), I feel content :). I understand why so many people love her novels.
I also just watched Northanger Abbey (thanks to Sherien, I think she has all film adaptations of Jane Austen!). The story is lighter but I am entertained, especially because the guy who plays as Mr. Henry Tilney is super ultra charming *grin*. The film is a bit to short though, there are some things that I still do not comprehend. That’s why I am thinking to buy the novel so I can know more about the gorgeous Mr. Tilney! So my next Austen’s novel will be that or Pride and Prejudice.

Oh my, I am such in a mood to read lots, particulary Vcitorian novels. I like it! So if there’s any title that you’d like to recommend, just tell me, okay?

I haven’t read any Jane Austen’s novels so I cannot compare Sense and Sensibility the film with the book. Yet, if I have to judge only the film, I think it is good and I am satisfied. I highly praise Ang Lee for being able to bring the English-feel. The main story is about two sisters, Elinor (who represents sense) and Marianne (who represents sensibility, in 1800’s term) Dashwood. I won’t tell you about the details of the film. I just wanna say that I adore the two heroes, Colonel Brandon and Edward Ferrars. I think I fall easily for a gentleman like Colonel Brandon, played by the blonde Alan Rickman. He looks kinda cold but at the same time warm. Oh how Alan Rickman looks so sexy in that Victorian suit :). Also, Hugh Grant as Edward, even though it’s not his best performance I can say his acting suits the role. It is fine. And my, the two heroines! I truly think Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet play really well! It is just nice to see the bond between the sisters. Another thing that I like is their dresses. Victorian dresses are very pretty but also sexy due to its low neck line. The love story, oh yeah. I was curious to know how their love story would end, and I screamed in joy because of the happy ending. All in all, this is a pretty film, a good one to watch with your sisters.

Yesterday [info]the_incognito and I went to [info]bijzonder’s house. It was raining hard but thank God we managed to come. I had such a blast there, chatting and laughing a lot with them. It’s too bad [info]odayski couldn’t come :(. Well, next time, dearie! Anyway, [info]bijzondershared her mp3s, including Jeremy Irons reading Brideshead Revisited! It is just so nice to hear his voice before getting to sleep. From all the mp3s I ‘stole’ from her, I must say I am impressed by Franz Ferdinand, Duke Special, Mumm-Ra, The Bishops, and surprisingly, The View. I thought The View were just a copycat of The Libertines, but then their album is quite fresh for my ears. All in all, yesterday was so fun. We should do it again and again *hugs*.

Okay, after having so much fun on Monday, here’s what I gotta do: Write an article for the faculty journal – my counselor wants me to sum up my thesis into ten-page article. I thought I was already free from Patrick ... I was wrong then.

And I am glad Heath Ledger got the award that he deserves. *bows*

I do not watch films a lot, but in the last few days, I managed to watch three DVDs: The Fall, Prince Caspian and Brideshead Revisited. The review of Brideshead Revisited is quite bitter, but I cannot help it. That’s what I really think and feel about the adaptation. Next I’m planning to watch Becoming Jane, Casanova and Sense and Sensibility.

Happy new year again! So what did you guys do on new year’s eve? I stayed at home, reading magz that I just bought, watching telly and falling asleep at one in the morning. The Changcuters was playing at Pantai Carnival Ancol, and thankfully it was aired by RCTI. Seeing that boy playing guitar surely made my new year’s eve. Oh my, no matter how hard I try to resist it, I must say I dig that boy!
I also watched <Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, which is my favourite Harry Potter’s film so far. Especially because of that sparks between Ron and Hermione start to come out. What a cute couple, aren’t they? I just love seeing Ron cutely feels jealous when he sees Hermione dancing with Victor Krum. No one can replace Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley. And young Robert Pattinson ... I do not like seeing him as Edward Cullen but as Cedric? I gotta say he’s tempting :D. The scene when he told Harry to open the golden egg in the bathroom ... didn’t the director realize that scene could lead to another interpretation? *grin* Oh me and my corrupted mind XD. Anyway, the first time I watched Cedric’s death scene, I felt nothing at all. But watching it for the second time, particularly when Harry brought Cedric’s body back, it was so heartbreaking. Awww. I miss Harry Potter’s film. I cannot wait to see The Half Blood Prince since it’s my favourite Harry Potter book. Lots of Snape in it and I love Severus Snape!

Currently ... loving my new 2009 journal, getting it for free from Girlfriend magazine. Saving money for super cool shoes. I am thinking to buy a pair from Charles and Keith. Wanting to hang out with my two besties. I am fed up with this cold war!

Inspired by [info]tomatoe18’s list, I decided to make my own 2008 eyecandies list. Here it is!
1.Rich Archer (Hard-Fi) – those bright blue eyes are still hypnotizing me *dies*
2.Matt Tong (Bloc Party) – he bangs the drum and he captures my heart!
3.Hotel aka Jamie Hince (The Kills) – almost 40 but still looks sexy
4.Xabi Alonso (Liverpool FC) – the hottest daddy of 2008
5.Arlanda Ghazali Langitan – don’t ask don’t ask don’t ask. I just dig this boy.

Oh, look. Rich is so excited I’m making him number one.

My mom’s comment after seeing my laptop wallpaper (which is Ben and Matthew in Brideshead Revisited): ‘Ooh, very handsome.’

I realize that my method of writing my postgraduate thesis is quite different from my undergraduate one. During the writing of my undergraduate thesis, I was well organized. I wrote things in order. But now ... it is hard to put everything properly. My mind just works randomly, so I write down things randomly too. Whatever comes into my mind, I write it down and will edit it later. Well, it is better than doing nothing though ...

I still haven’t finished A Clockwork Orange! Gah, reading it really sucks my energy out.

[info]odayski, I finally found Dutch Lady’s Iced Latte :D. This is such a simple thing but makes me really happy :D.

Just had a consultation with my thesis counsellor. It turns out that I still have to revise my first chapter, but generally she said my topic was fine and I could continue working on it ^^. So, the focus of my postgraduate thesis is identity issue in Breakfast on Pluto. I’m not going to analyze it from psychoanalytical approach (cos I’m not an expert in it), just from cultural studies point of view. And oh my, Patrick Braden is very complex. I hope I can write a good thesis about it. Amen! As usual, wish me the greatest of luck, friends! Writing a thesis is gonna be a tough process but I truly believe I’ll learn a lot from it.
Everytime I have a literary discussion with my lecturers or my college friends, I always think that this is my world. I wanna be in it forever. But then again, I still do not know what to do in the future *sighs*. But I’ll find it out, I am sure!

A few years ago when I was still taking my undegraduate degree, my faculty library didn’t have a lot of new books. They only had some text books from the 70s and the 80s while cultural theories kept on developing, especially with the growing of cultural studies. Yet today I lurv my faculty library (even though sometimes I am still annoyed by its noisy crowd)! It has many interesting books, and I am borrowing some:
1.Irony by Claire Colebrook – I am borrowing it for the sake of my thesis. I think irony also takes part in Breakfast on Pluto.
2.British Fiction of the 1990s edited by Nick Bentley – A collection of essays about British novels in the 90s, from Ian McEwan to Pat Barker. I’m more interested in British novels than American novels, actually. And I believe reading this will broaden my knowledge about British literary scene.
3.A Dog’s Life by Peter Mayle – A dog becomes the narrator of the story. I bet it’ll be hilarious.

Just finished The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. I’m kinda disturbed by the violence, but in the end I found this book is good. It’s interesting to see how Connolly re-interprets the fairy tales (like Little Red-Riding Hood who has sex with the wolf, urgh). Moving on to another book! I’m thinking to read A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess or Our Mutual Friend by Dickens, since it’s been ages since I last finished Dickens’ novels (which is Great Expectations, and I don’t finish reading David Copperfield since I have watched the miniseries first and lose the excitement of the story ... ).

Photobucket Image Hosting
Speaking of Dickens, I must say that I really enjoy the last adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby. The reason is very subjective, which is the gorgeousness of Charlie Hunnam in Victorian suit :D. But I do enjoy the whole film I can watch it again and again. The relationship between Nicholas and Smike is also very cute and okay, homoerotic XD. The line uttered by Smike ‘You are my home’ is not in the book, so there must be some reasons why the scriptwriter put that line there. Charlie and Jamie just look good together but then Anne Hathaway comes and steals the position. Bah.
And I just read that there's a new play of Nicholas Nickleby. Wanna see it!

In love with:
-This Is Ivy League. Their album is duper enjoyable.
-Xabi Alonso’s baby boy (Xabi, please, not Arsenal!)
-Heroes 2nd season will replace Gossip Girl. Woohoo.
-Johnny Depp will play as Riddler. That’s awesome.
-Sam Endicott in Gap ad (see? Demolishing the mohawk does bring good things :D)

*Just watched Death Becomes Her (It’s Bruce Willis’ week on TV7, oh well), and laughed a lot. Such a crazy film, isn’t it? But look at Mad and Hell characters, and see around you. Don’t you think we are all obsessed to be forever young?
*Also finished Harry and The Treasure of Adam Carver by Alan Temperley and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The first one is a children book, and it’s more entertaining than the first one. The Wrinklies are remarkable, making me wish to have an aunty as cool as auntie Bridget. The strong characterization of The Wrinklies is the power of the book, yet at the same it can be said as a weakness because Harry, the main character, becomes quite ordinary, boring, and not loveable. And The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, oh this one is soooo impressive *bouncy*. Hail Fitzgerald! It tells about Benjamin Button, who ages in reverse. So, he’s born not as a tiny baby but as an old man, and every year he just gets younger. I read this as a fantastic story (I use the term ‘fantastic’ not fantasy because it refers more to the effect after reading the story) and just enjoy it without any pretention. But when I finished reading the last line, there are some guidance questions, asking about the correlation between the story and the social crisis of the era. I was, like, what? I didn’t think that far ... It’s just a really good fantastic story. [info]the_incognito and [info]dothestrand, you should read The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Maybe you can find the e-book.

Talking about e-book, a few weeks ago I had this conversation with [info]the_incognito and Tiko about some things that cannot be replaced by technology. Like, reading newspaper. Even though there’s digital newspaper, I do believe that it’s not easy to substitute printed newspaper . What do our fathers like to do every morning? Drinking a cup of coffee while reading newspaper in his hands. It’s one of the best things to do in the morning. Also, [info]the_incognito and I agree that reading a book is still far more enjoyable than reading an e-book. When you touch the paper, you just feel connected with the story. For me personally, this kind of experience is irreplaceable. What do you think?

And to end this entry, a meme taken from [info]o_chan ...

Just found this video on Youtube, and I enjoy it A LOT.

Never thought someone as macho as Rich could actually look good with a mixer XD! Even the cook said that Rich mixed wonderfully. Nice use of adverb, hahaha.

Just saw two films with a similar sci-fi theme, Butterfly Effect and Frequency. Both films tell a story about people trying to change the past to achieve a better future. Let’s start with Butterfly Effect first. I think Ashton’s performance is okay. Not fantastic, but at least he doesn’t look like Kelso anymore. His character, Evan, is someone who often loses his memory and does not remember what happened earlier. Yet, using his journals, he also finds a way to go back to the past and find out what actually happened during the black-out. Evan also tries to change the past with a hope that everything will be much better in the future. Just like any other formula in sci-fi film, do not change the past because something unexpected might happen. And that happens to Evan. When the situation is better for his friends, he finds out that things get worse for him and his mom. It’s kinda complicated, really, but I think the resolution is good and a bit heartbreaking. Moving on to Frequency, the story is a bit simpler. Through a radio, John Sullivan could communicate with his dad who lives in 1969 (John himself lives in 1999). Then they’re trying to change what’s going to happen in 1969, including the death of John’s dad. The plot is not as surprising as Butterfly Effect, but Frequency is quite entertaining. And Jim Cavaziel does look really hot :9.

My bro is in the angry-young-man phase. He seems to complain about any system or ideology. Well, I’ve been in that phase before, but now I realize that you could make the world better by doing simple things. You do not have to be an acitivist and go down to the streets and march and cause a traffic jam. My bro is ambitious and has such a great plan to make things better. Well, I am completely different from him in this case. I just want to live a simple and normal live. And I have my own personal way (even though it’s not huge) to heal the scar.

And my new crush: The Spinto Band, thanks to [info]the_incognito!

So, last week one of local TVs had Reese Witherspoon week. Basically, they played some of Reese’s films like Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions. Surprisingly, they also aired American Psycho. Weird choice,eh? But it was okay for me since I had wanted to watch this film. I wanted to see Christian Bale’s acting. The film itself is weird (never read the book though, maybe it’s far weirder). Or maybe it was edited too much, for its violence, I kinda lost the plot? Anyway, Bale’s acting is good, and that role must be very challenging for him. Patrick Bateman just cannot spend a night without murdering someone. Eerie, isn’t it? However, as the film rolled on, instead of cursing him, I started to pity Bateman. Since in the end, when he made a confession that he had murdered people and couldn’t stand it anymore, NOBODY LISTENED TO HIM. NOBODY FUCKING CARED. So, who is the psycho one? Is it Patrick Bateman or the high class society represented in the film? Worth-thinking.
Oh, has anyone ever seen Swing Kid DVD? Young Bale is in it (even though his face is kinda too old for his age, admit it), and I’d like to see it :D.
And Sindro, d’you still despise Bale for not showing his teeth when he talks :D?

And Brideshead Revisited is finally out! Many were pessimistic about the film. Well, I am too since they have changed the story quite a lot. From some comments that I have read, the film is focusing on the love conflict between Charles, Julia and Sebastian. Sebs is even openly gay in this film, which I think I never found in the book. Oh hell, as someone who’s read the novel and watched some episodes of its TV series, the film is possibly disappointing. But I gotta watch it first then judge it. That’s what I call fair.

And to end this post …
Saw a film with very cheesy special effects last nite, maybe it’s Dungeons and Dragons. What makes it even worse is that the villain of the film is Jeremy Irons! And the worst thing is that the end of the film a dragon eats him alive! Oh help me God …

Oh wow, I considered myself very lucky to get free tickets to watch The Dark Knight ‘cos I heard it’s very hard to get the tickets during the first days of its release. My sis who watched it again on Sunday said that even though she and her friends managed to queue earlier, they got the tickets for the third row from the screen! And the tickets for the next show was already sold out! Many people have been waiting for this film for so long, haven’t they? For comic fans, they want to see Batman and his famous Batpod. For Joker’s fans, they want to see if Heath can compete Jack Nicholson, and for Heath’s fans, they want to see his last performance. And many people that I know who have watched The Dark Knight, they’re all very satisfied. Somehow it makes me very glad to know that Heath’s hardwork is appreciated a lot. He surely has worked extremely hard for Joker role, and even it can be said the role has ‘killed’ him. Playing as Joker frustrated him, that is why he took some medicine to get him to sleep. Someone can die for a piece of art, that’s shocking for me. An Oscar for Heath, for sure.

The trip to Bandung was fine, even though we spent lots of time in my bro’s room since we had to clean it up. It was so dirty like a pig sty, urgh. I only bought a shirt (God, my money!) and didn’t visit many places, but seeing another place besides Jakarta was refreshing enough for me brain. I also ate a long during the trip … I gotta do something to avoid another gain of weight.

The book that I am translating is somehow kinda biased … well, my current task is to translate it not to criticize it. So let it be. Since the deadline of the book is the first week of August, I might not be updating my journal very often. Wish me luck!

For all of you who like sushi, I recommend this restaurant named Montaro in Bintaro Sector 9, behind McDonal Bintaro. It's good and it's cheap. I am in love with it :)

Yes, The Joker has arrived, and he’s stealing the show. So, this morning I watched The Dark Knight along with all the winners of the quiz and the journalists. My sis and I arrived at 08.25 AM, even before they operated the escalator XD so we had to climb the stairs. I was really really excited since I had been waiting this film for almost two years. And as The Joker fan, am I satisfied? Yes, I am.
The Dark Knight review, beware of the spoiler )

Sadly, my small reunion is cancelled ‘cos some of them have to work. Well next time then.
Oh, I’m going to Bandung tomorrow. I am broke though, so I don’t think I’ll buy something …
